TIPS FROM YOUR NRA TILING WALL TILER
Preparation
- Do your research and find out what adhesives are right for your climate. Humid areas or cold areas may need a different adhesive to combat the weather. Wall tiles in the bathroom where humidity is a given will need a different adhesive to tiles located in your kitchen.
- Choose wall tiles for walls and floor tiles for floors. As they won’t be walked on, wall tiles may have lighter glazing that will still make the tiles waterproof but won’t need to be as durable as floor tiles. Because of where they are laid, wall tiles are often thinner and lighter than floor tiles.
- Prepare your surface! The preparation of your surface cannot be stressed highly enough. Any wall tiler worth his wage will tell you that a poorly prepared surface will yield a sub-standard job.
Laying
- Leave a space for the floor tile that will need to go under the bottom wall tile. Better still, mount a level batten up the wall a bit, slightly lower in height than a single tile, and start tiling upwards from there. Later, once the floor tiles are in, you can remove the batten and cut the bottom tiles to size.
- To make sure the tile sticks to the adhesive when laying, give it a slight twist and press firmly into the wall.
- Ensure that you have a consistent gap between tiles by placing them side by side with spacers in between.
- Clean away any excess adhesive straight away with a damp sponge.
Trouble-shooting
- Periodically check that the tiles are level and flat by using a spirit level.
- Don’t be tempted to grout before the tile adhesive is dry. You can check the manufacturer’s recommended drying times on the product.
- Always follow manufacturer’s instructions on adhesives. If the instructions say to mix and allow to settle, take the time to allow the mixture to settle. If the instructions say, apply sparingly, it’s best to do what it says!
- Fix issues as they come up; don’t wait until the whole wall is tiled or you might have to pull all the tiles off and start again.
HOW MUCH DOES A WALL TILER COST?
In Brisbane, a wall tiler charges either by the square metre or by the hour. If you’re tiling an indoor wall, a tiler will charge between $40 and $100 per hour.
If you’re working on a square meterage quote, you’ll be looking at between $30 and $50 per square metre.
The costs vary depending on the size of the job, the kind of tiles being used, the difficulty of the project and how urgent your job is.
It’s worthwhile getting a few different quotes and doing your homework before deciding to engage a wall tiler for your project because it’s not just about the cost.
You’ll want someone who you are comfortable having in your home, is respectful and tidy and communicates well with you throughout the whole process.
A cheap quote might be enticing but check that it isn’t too good to be true before committing.
You’ll need to check that your tiler is licensed through QBCC. If they aren’t, you run the risk of having no workmanship guarantee, even if they claim they can do the job.
